Disabled Access

‘To offer access to people of all ages, abilities, origins and backgrounds to develop.....’

Or so says the Morwellham Quay staff induction brochure - another example of failed policy making from the Morwellham and Tamar Valley Trust.

A lot of fine words on paper, but not much happening on the ground!

Sadly, for a tourist attraction at the heart of a world heritage site, endorsed enthusiastically by Devon County Council, access to large parts of Morwellham Quay is made  unnecessarily difficult (and in parts impossible) for those in wheelchairs or with other mobility problems.

For many visitors willing to part with the £8.50 ‘passport’ ticket, a tram ride through the copper mine is very much the highlight of their day. That is of course unless they are wheelchair bound, because wheelchairs are not allowed in the passenger carriages.

The mine manager Mr Stewart informs us that due to the age of the carriages, the tramway is exempt from legislation that would otherwise force the operators to provide access for wheelchairs.

Other parts of the site that present particular difficulties are the ship ‘Garlandstone’, the lime kilns, the nature and woodland trails, Newquay, and the farm.
